TG Creator Corner with illustrator and animator Lisa Vertudaches

In Total Girl's Creator Corner section, we chat to awesome authors and artists and discover how they got to where they are today. Lisa Vertudaches is an illustrator and animator. Fun fact: she's been illustrating our Blush of the Issue stories over the last couple of issues. OMTG! In our February/March 2026 issue, we're shining a spotlight on Lisa and here are some bonus bits from our chat with Lisa. Enjoy!

Hi Lisa! As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
L:
An Author. My parents encouraged me for a while to become a journalist - but I thought that meant I had to be on camera all the time, and that didn’t appeal to me.

Wow! What is the most fun thing about being an illustrator/animator?
L: I love the variety of projects, it never gets boring! I’ve been able to work on books, tv shows, comics, (magazine editorials 👀 ) and even video games.

What is the most challenging thing about being an illustrator?
L:
The quiet moments. These times can be good as I have space to work on my own projects - but a girl’s got bills to pay!

And what is the most challenging thing about being an animator?
L:
It’s always when a big project finishes and I have to say goodbye to a team. I move onto a lot of different projects, sometimes for just a month, sometimes for six months and I build up such nice friendships, and it can be hard to say goodbye and move onto the next thing sometimes. But it’s great making new friends along the way!

Did you know that Lisa created this cool illustration for TG's Blush of the Issue? Love!

We read that you worked on projects with Warner Bros and Nickelodeon, what were those projects?
L:
I was invited to be a part of a 25 year celebration of Nicktoons, where me and 25 other animators made looping Vines (RIP) each tributing a different show on Nickelodeon! I created an ode to their show Catscratch! I’ve also worked on visual development and character design for shows with Nickelodeon and Warner Bros! I briefly got to be involved on a Looney Tunes project as a character designer, which was super intimidating, but a lot of fun!

Cool! What’s an achievement in your career that you’re super proud of?
L:
Winning the Sonic the Hedgehog colouring competition in Grade 4. In more recent times, I raised $3,500 after the 2019 Australian bushfires, donating money from a project with GIPHY where I animated some of the endangered Australian Animals who were displaced from the fires. It felt good to be helping my community in that way.

Aside from being an amazing illustrator and animator, what other special or secret talents do you have?
L:
Because I spend a lot of time on my computer, I love to get away from the desk and make things with my hands when I can. I work with clay, felt, pens and inks- whatever tangible thing I can get my hands on.

What are your goals for 2026?
L:
I really want to make an entire exhibition about worms. Just worms made in all different styles and mediums - sparkly ones, felt ones, paper ones animated ones. I want to call it ‘Wormdemic: Shock and Terror.”

What are some upcoming projects that you can share with TGs to look out in 2026?
L:
Well apart from the biggest wormzibit of all time… I’m currently illustrating a children’s book and working as part of a team on a brand new animated show - both of which I can’t say much about right now- but keep your peepers peeled, some fun things are on their way!

You can check out more of our interview with Lisa in the February/March 2026 'Make a Splash' issue of Total Girl, out the week of January 19 in Australia.
