Get to know Canadian singer-songwriter, Billianne

Billianne came into the spotlight through her stunning covers and her voice has been described as "beautiful" by the one and only, Taylor Swift! Now Billianne is an artist in her own right and has just released her debut album, Modes of Transportation. We get to know this Canadian singer-songwriter...

Hi Billianne! What was your first concert?
B:
I was a late concert bloomer. It was in 2019 and I went to Jonas Brothers.

Wow, that is a pretty great first concert!
B:
It was their revival tour. I was a late teenager going to my first ever concert, it was awesome. They were really good.

What’s your favourite Jonas Brothers song?
B:
I love the song ‘Don’t Throw It Away’ from that album that they were touring for at the time [Happiness Begins]. Their regroup album.

Which fictional character are you most like or can relate to?
B:
I think if anyone has ever seen Gravity Falls, it’s Mabel from Gravity Falls. I love her so much and all her sweaters. They’re just like bedazzled and cute. I just love her personality and I feel like I see her in me. When I’m my goofiest self, I’m Mabel.

Who would you love to switch places with for a day?
B:
I feel like I’d love to switch places with Olivia Dean I think actually sometimes. (laughs) She’s just so ethereal and has so much fun on stage. So I’m always trying to channel that and to be Olivia Dean for a day, I think would be amazing.

What were you like as a kid?
B:
I was very outgoing as a child. I made friends all the time, I would just walk up to people and ask them if they wanted to be my friend. And constantly making jokes, trying to make my siblings laugh, making faces, pretending to do skits. The most silly kid that you could meet, that was me as a child.

Taylor Swift commented on your 'Labyrinth' cover, but you’ve actually done a couple of Taylor covers. What's your favourite one that you’ve done?
B:
Ooh. I mean ‘Labyrinth’ is up there for me. For me, that song just stood out so much for me from the album. And I felt like no one else was talking about it at the time. I think it’s just so beautiful. One of my other favourites is ‘mirrorball’. folklore in general is just a good album, but ‘mirrorball’ stood out to me. When it came out, I was like this is everything that I am. I am a mirrorball.

Love! What would you say
has been the most coolest moment in your journey so far?
B:
The coolest moment... I think what comes to mind right now, because I’m thinking about touring a lot, is when I toured with Hollow Coves [Fun fact: they're an Aussie band!] for a month and we were on a tour bus together. I think that’s like the rockstar dream right? Everyone thinks about tour in that way or sleeping on a bus. I got that for the first tour that I was ever a part of, so that is probably way up there for one of the coolest things that I’ve done so far.

How does it feel to release your first album, Modes of Transportation?
B:
It feels crazy. I’ve been working on this album for so long. It'’s my first album, which also I feel – I do have an EP out, but this to me feels more like my story. Like what I’ve always been wanting to do since the beginning of writing songs, so it’s really cool for people to finally have something big like this to sink their teeth into and get to know me.

Which song on the album are you most proud of?
B:
Ohhh. You know, there is so many and so many different things that I’m proud of on this album. I think if I’m thinking in terms of how difficult or challenging a song was to come to and make it sound right, I would say either it’s ‘Future Emma’ or ‘Wishlist’. We spent so much time with those two songs, making sure that they sound how they do today and trying to present them in the best way that we possibly can. I’m very proud of those two, but I’m proud of them all – they’re all my little babies on there. (laughs)

Was there a song on the album that was super easy to write and just came like that?
B:
I think the first song for me ‘Modes I’, that came really really quickly to me.

So this album is about growing up and figuring out who you are. What advice would you give to TGs who are struggling to believe in themselves?
B:
Aww I would say, I mean I struggle with myself all the time too. It’s such a hard thing and one thing I’d say is don’t feel so alone in it because everyone online is going to present themselves in a way that looks like they’ve got it all together and looks like they’re not hard on themselves, but everyone is. And one of the ways that I try to get past it and that I think is helpful for people to is just to keep trying to speak kindly to yourself in your own mind because it’s so easy to say all those negative things and let them just pass through your brain. You even forget you’ve said it but it’s there now because you’ve thought it. So just speaking kindly to yourself and just taking that leap and believing yourself. Always trying, that’s what I try to do as well. It’s always a journey, but that’s what I’d say.
