Hi Henry! Welcome to Australia! What have you been up to while you've been here?
H: Done the tour, saw some creepy crawlies and snakes at the zoo. I went surfing on the Gold Coast, which was really fun. I've just been chilling apart from that, like going on walks. We went on a walk and saw the Opera House yesterday and just seeing the city. It's been really fun.
Tell us about your song 'right person, wrong time' and how it came together.
H: Everyone's got that one that got away. So I wrote that song about that person for me who I just feel like could've been something if we really went for it and it was the right time. It's probably my favourite song I've ever written. I wrote it by myself in my bedroom. I had a writing trip in Sweden a few months ago, working with this producer that I really like. So I wanted to just go with all these songs and make the most out of it. And that was one of the songs that I brought into those sessions. We ended up just spending the days just perfecting it. I'm so grateful we did... Sometimes you can have quite a quick fast paced method of songwriting. With this one, we were like, 'no, let's really take our time with it’.
‘Bad Emotions’ is also one of our faves by you. It's very relatable - breathing and counting to three, very wise words there. Do you have any other ways that you cope when you're feeling stressed or anxious?
H: Thank you. I do this thing where like I breathe in until I can't anymore and then take another breath. Like, you take a massive inhale, and then exhale for even longer and that really just slows down your heart rate. I feel like sometimes when you're anxious, you just need something to take yourself out of the situation before you think about things. So I feel like breathing is getting your heart rate into a good place. It's like step one and then you can start thinking about things. Like logic, I feel like sometimes when you're anxious, it doesn't work unless you're physically calming yourself down. Another thing, listening to music really helps. Going on a walk if it's possible, and I can do it. Obviously if I'm in the middle of a show or something, I can't just go on a walk or whatever. But sometimes just going on a stroll, listening to music and moving helps.
Inside Out 2 is another thing that kind of got us in our feels this year. Have you seen it?
H: I wish ‘Bad Emotions’ got a sync on that. Not the right timing, but that song literally is like Inside Out 2 to a T. Yeah, I've seen it. Twice.
Which character do you vibe with?
H: Anxiety. Literally to a T. We're so similar. Besties.
What five emojis would best describe your EP, good old days?
H: Probably the ☺️. The EP is like the most moody thing ever - it goes with my surname - so probably the smiling one. The sad face 😔, the confused face 😕, because I feel like it is about growing up. I feel like when you're growing up you're so confused about so many different things, you're figuring out so many different things. Probably the stars in the eyes 🤩, because I feel like it's quite optimistic at points. The heart eyes face one 😍, because there's a song in there about falling in love.
Let's literally talk about the good old days - what were you like as a kid?
H: I feel like as a kid I was very anxious, but also very playful. I'm quite an extroverted person, so I feel like I was constantly out and about doing things. There were gamers and stuff, I was never really that kind of person. I didn't really enjoy connecting with people online and stuff; it was very much in real life. I loved actually getting outside and playing games and sports. So I was quite an extroverted kid and also super anxious at the same time.
What's the most memorable fan moment that you've had?
H: There's so many. Everyone is so nice. Someone came up and sung with me at VIP once and it was really fun. I love when you like do a duet with someone, so maybe that. Actually, someone painted a portrait of me and gave it to me in the line for one of the shows. It was such an insane drawing. I was blown away. She's so talented.
What has been the most 'pinch me, I'm dreaming moment' that you've had in your career so far?
H: I did a pop up show in Indonesia once and thousands of people turned up. I was just like 'oh my god'. It was just so surreal the whole thing because the amount of people that came. I think that was the biggest pinch me moment.
We hear that you are a massive Swiftie. Did you go to The Eras Tour?
H: Yes. I'm a massive Swiftie. No, I was never in the right city at the right time. Her London shows, I've always been away doing something, so I actually haven't seen it. Which is the craziest thing because she's the reason I got into music. I would not be doing this if it wasn't for Taylor Swift coz I'm the biggest Swiftie. So it's kind of crazy how I've actually missed The Eras Tour.
