Total Girl were lucky enough to interview the Roar singer about her latest album, Prism, her inspiration, advice and more. Read on for the latest in her world!

Total Girl: What does your new album Prism represent for you?

Katy Perry: It's called Prism because I went through some difficult and dark times and I was finally able to emerge from that period and let the light into my life. The album and thePrismatic World Tour is all about sharing that light and beaming it back out to all my fans through my songs. The world tour will be very colourful, I promise!

Do you feel you're where you want to be in life now?

I still have a way to go. I'm becoming stronger and, I hope, wiser. I feel like I'm a work in progress.

How do you go about finding material for your songs or does most of it come naturally?

A lot of it is reflective of the kinds of emotional states I'm experiencing but it's also the product of lots of experiences I've had since the last album.

What are your favourite tracks from the new album?

One of my favourite songs is "Unconditionally" because it's about this universal love and highest level of love.

Do you get a lot of satisfaction about inspiring people through your music?

It's a joy to make people feel some happiness and feel some release. Our lives can be difficult and tedious and monotonous and sometimes so stressful and then a little 3 minute 30 second song will start playing on the radio and make life a little easier.

What songs get you pumped up these days?

Early Madonna, early Rihanna, some early deep house stuff that Kristen Waters. I like those big soul divas right now.

What message girls draw from Prism and what you've gone through personally?

You should be true to yourself in all situations and know self-love before any other kind of love. Focus on loving yourself. Young women should build up their own character and live their lives with integrity. Don't follow any trends. Be your own woman. You will prevail!

How does Prism compare to Teenage Dream?

Teenage Dream was very cutesy whereas Prism is my wearing my heart on my sleeve and is much more emotionally revealing. Prism is a deeply personal album and there are so many anthemic and uplifting messages on it as well as fun party songs. It continues my story and shows how much I've grown over the last three years.
